French President Emmanuel Macron is under pressure from the opposition in the National Assembly to finally appoint a new prime minister now that the Paris Olympics are over, but no clear candidate has emerged. Outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has written a letter to several factions in the National Assembly, excluding Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) and La France Insoumise (LFI).

In his letter, Attal calls for the formation of an alliance to form a working majority to choose the next prime minister. Such an alliance would exclude the RN, which won the most votes of any party in the July legislative elections, and the LFI, which won the most votes of any party in the far-left New Popular Front (NFP) bloc.

The parties that make up the New Popular Front, including LFI and the Socialist and Communist parties, have the most seats in the National Assembly, but do not have enough to govern alone. The “Macronist” faction of globalists loyal to the president, including Attal, obtains the second largest number of seats, with the RN third despite its first place in terms of popular vote share.

The bloc supporting Macron has already managed to re-elect Yaël Braun-Pivet as president of the National Assembly by securing the support of the establishment right-wing Les Républicains, a minor RINO-type faction.

The far-left and globalist parties have managed to conspire to prevent Marine Le Pen’s RN from accessing all the key positions in the National Assembly, which Marine Le Pen and many citizens consider undemocratic.

TRUCE OVER, NO COALITION.

Now that the so-called Olympic truce is over, the Socialists are demanding that President Macron immediately appoint a new prime minister.

Socialist Party spokeswoman Chloe Ridel said Macron could no longer delay the decision because a new budget must be finalized by the end of September. Ridel acknowledged that forming an effective coalition in parliament would take time, but she warned that the current caretaker government could not last forever.

If a coalition can be formed, it will likely involve the second-placed Macronists splitting the far-left New Popular Front parties, such as the Socialists, from the left-wing populist LFI party, perhaps with the support of the Republicans.

Raheem Kassam, editor of the National Pulse, predicted before the Olympics that if Macron’s left-wing and globalist French parties fail to form a lasting coalition, new snap elections are likely.
