Introducing Twenty Twenty-Five – Building the Core of WordPress

WordPress version 6.7 will feature a new default theme: Twenty Twenty-Five.

Four public domain film stills: one showing a historic building, one a close-up of flowers, one of birds, and one of an African woman. Below it says Twenty Twenty-Five.

Concept

When designing Twenty Twenty-Five, a recurring idea was that simple things should be intuitive while complex things should be possible. This concept of simplicity and complexity leads to a reliable foundation for extending a default WordPress experience to customize it.

Twenty Twenty-Five embodies ultimate flexibility and adaptability, showcasing the many ways WordPress allows users to tell their stories with numerous templates and styles to choose from. The glimpses of natural beauty and ancestry woven into the theme evoke ideas of impermanence, the passage of time, and continued evolution.

The images of the demo content, all from the public domain, carry a poetic, universal and omnipresent tone that complements the heart Core is the set of software needed to run WordPress. The Core development team creates WordPress. concept. There was an opportunity to visually rely on a positive tone to bring softness, lightness and inspiration through its aesthetic.

Reasons

Structurally, Twenty Twenty-Five offers a robust set of templates, promoting interoperability and allowing users to quickly compose intentional pages. A wide range of templates have been designed for categories such as services, homepages, landing pages, products, calls to action, events and others.

Styles

Given the global usage of the theme, comprehensive and high-quality fonts supporting multiple languages were considered from the early conceptual stages of the design. Additionally, we are refining a set of diverse color palettes to be integrated into the theme as style variations.

Models

Twenty Twenty-Five also offers a versatile set of blog (versus network, site) templates: text-centric blogs with sidebars, photo blogs that emphasize featured images, and more complex blogs with diverse content. Twenty Twenty-Five will be fully compatible with the site editor and will use many new design tools such as the grid block Block is the abstract term used to describe the units of markup that, when composed together, form the content or layout of a web page using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what has been achieved in the past with shortcodes, custom HTML, and integration discovery into a single, consistent API and user experience. and pattern/section styles.

Personal Blog (default)

In keeping with the idea of simplicity, the trend in personal blogging is to rely on a default template that simply works, whether you want to write a post with a title and featured image A featured image is the main image used on your blog’s archive page and is retrieved when the post or page is shared on social media. The image can be used to display in widget areas on your site or in a summary list of posts. or not, and displaying the entire content of the ready-made message, instead of just excerpts.

Photo blog (alternative)

Alternative “photo blog” templates, designed primarily for photography or portfolios, take an image-driven approach, with interesting layouts that can be used for a variety of purposes.

Two mockups: the left one shows only the main image of the blog posts and the right one shows a single post with a full-width image.

Complex Blog (Alternative)

Finally, the set of alternative complex blog templates would be better suited for websites with more complex content. Some of these templates, with a wider variety of type scales and more oriented designs, may also appeal to different audiences.

Two mockups: the one on the left shows a 3-column grid with blog posts containing featured images and post titles followed by a 2-column grid, and the one on the right shows a single post with a large left-aligned title, post meta, and a large image, followed by the post content with a sidebar on the right.

Development

As part of version 6.7, Carolina Nymark (@poena) and Juanfra Aldasoro (@juanfra) lead development while Beatriz Fialho (@beafialho) is a leader in design. If you would like to contribute, be sure to follow this blog; we count on your involvement and support throughout the process.

The Figma file is the source of truth for the design. Comments in the main file are open and anyone should feel free to duplicate the Figma in their drafts and remix it. Both actions are free, while any editing access is paid and therefore reserved.

Theme development will be done on the Twenty Twenty-Five GitHub repository. You can contribute by submitting and reviewing pull requests or opening new issues and, as usual, once the theme is stable, it will be merged with Core and the GitHub GitHub is a website that provides an online implementation of git repositories that can be easily shared, copied, and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of “pull requests” where code changes made to branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ the deposit will be archived.
