Draper wins most controversial match point ever, Aliassime shocked

Grotesque, never seen, never happened. This is the cold and brief analysis of what happened on the match ball between Jack Draper And Felix Auger-Aliassime to the Cincinnati Operan.

The British and Canadians gave life to a very contested match, but which did not end in the best of ways. The match point with which the British defeated the Canadians 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, was very contested and sent fans wild on social networks.

The British player’s volley managed to end its journey on the other side of the net, even touching the adhesive tape – but in an irregular way. The ball bounced irregularly and, thanks to the various slow-motion videos circulating on social networks, it was possible to notice how it touched half of Draper’s court before arriving on the other side.

The speed of the shot fooled the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth – for him, it was not the first questionable decision in recent weeks – which awarded the point to the British player. Auger-Aliassime remained incredulous and shocked after the match point and began to ask for a replay to change the decision. Several minutes were spent by the tennis players in confrontation with Allensworth, with the intervention of the supervisor who however confirmed the decision taken without particular doubts by the chair umpire. In the end, the Canadian gave up, shook his opponent’s hand and left the court.

Stefanos Tsitsipas also posted a slow-motion video on his X account to show the unnatural shot of the British player, who was also shocked by the episode. There was also a huge controversy among fans on social media, who contested the referee’s decision and Jack Draper’s behavior: for some users, in fact, the British tennis player had noticed the irregular bounce of his volley.
