Thieves Attempting to Steal 0,000 in Dodge Durangos Foiled by Security Barriers’ Dwayne Johnson
  • A Detroit youth gang has been arrested after unsuccessfully attempting to steal six Dodge Durango SUVs worth about $500,000.
  • The thieves drove two SUVs into Ground Effects Automotive’s heavy-duty security barrier, completely destroying the Durangos.
  • Four teenagers and a 24-year-old were arrested and all the Durangos, or what was left of them, were recovered at the scene.

We’ve seen it a million times in the movies. A car trying to escape a locked compound drives through a security fence as if it were made of balsa wood, which it probably is. But a gang of thieves in Detroit who tried the same trick with two stolen Dodge Durangos learned the hard way that real security fences are often much stronger.

It was so difficult, in the case of the barrier blocking the exit of Ground Effects Automotive in Warren, Michigan, that when thieves tried to break through it, it was the SUVs that were completely destroyed.

The incident took place at 6:35 a.m. Monday morning when a half-dozen thieves entered the Ground Effects parking lot with the intention of stealing five high-performance Durango SRTs and one regular model, collectively worth about $500,000.

Someone had seen the gang parked near the vehicles in the parking lot and alerted the police. When the officers arrived, they saw the embarrassing failed escape attempt just in time. We doubt any of the robbers bothered to buckle up before leaving, so the impact must have been as painful as it was surprising. The suspects then jumped out of the wrecked SUVs and fled. One of them managed to escape, but five others were arrested. Among them, one was 24 years old and the other four were 16 and 17 years old.

From what we can see in Fox2Based on the video footage, the barrier appears to be a StrongArm M30 or M50 made by HySecurity, a Washington-based company. The company describes these barriers as offering “ultimate stopping power” and claims they can “stop a truck in its tracks.” We believe it.

This isn’t the first time we’ve had to deal with teenagers trying to steal sports cars, but one fact that stands out in this case is that the gang brought their own cans of gas. In a recent case, thieves who stole 10 new Ford Raptors were caught because the car manufacturers were putting very little gas in their new cars, and the fleet-fingered crew had to stop at a gas station almost immediately.
