14-Year-Old Michigan Girl and Her 17-Year-Old Boyfriend Charged as Adults in Plot to Kill Her Mother

EASTPOINTE, Michigan — A 14-year-old Detroit-area girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend have been charged as adults in a plot to kill the girl’s mother.

The 17-year-old is accused of entering the family’s Eastpointe home through an open door in July and attempting to strangle the mother while she slept, the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Thursday.

The boy fled after being confronted by other family members present in the house.

Eastpointe police determined the two teens planned the attack, the prosecutor’s office said.

“The minor girl had met another minor on a social media app,” Eastpointe Police Chief Corey Haines told WJBK-TV. “They decided together that they were going to kill their mother.”

Police said the girl’s mother confiscated her phone after the girl was having problems at home. The mother was not aware of her boyfriend’s existence.

The girl was charged on Aug. 14 with aiding and abetting first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Her bail was set at $1 million. The 17-year-old was charged on Aug. 12 with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and assault with intent to murder. His bail was set at $2.5 million.

Both men were being held at the county’s juvenile justice center. They will appear in Eastpointe District Court on Tuesday to determine probable cause.

Their names have not been released.

“This level of criminal activity is unacceptable, and we intend to treat it with the severity it deserves,” U.S. Attorney Peter J. Lucido said in a news release. “That’s why we are seeking to charge these juveniles as adults – because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences.”
