2024 Women’s Open: Charley Hull takes one-shot lead after first round

England’s Charley Hull shot a superb five-under-par 67 to lead the Women’s Open after the first round at St Andrews.

The 28-year-old birdied four of the last nine holes of the Old Course to move one shot ahead of American Nelly Korda and Chinese Ruoning Yin.

Hull is seeking her first major title after finishing runner-up at the Women’s Open and US Women’s Open last year.

“I’ve worked a lot on my game this year and I feel confident,” Hull told BBC Sport.

“I try to enjoy every minute. It’s not every day you get to play at St Andrews so I’m just grateful to be out there, having fun and inspiring the youngsters.”

Hull shone in a strong group, playing alongside world number one Korda and reigning Women’s Open champion Lilia Vu.

The Briton reached the turn at one under par after two birdies and a bogey before a sparkling back nine in windy conditions saw her overtake Yin, who had held the lead for much of the day.

“I saw it as a challenge and when it’s a challenge it’s actually a lot of fun,” Hull added.

Yin, who won the 2023 Women’s PGA Championship, had seven birdies and three bogeys in her 4-under-par 68.

Korda, a two-time major winner, had five birdies and one bogey.

Vu shot a 69 and is in a group with Andrea Lee, Patty Tavatanakit, Lee Mi-hyang, Mao Saigo and Jenny Shin, two shots behind Hull.

Hull’s compatriot Georgia Hall eagled her final hole to finish one under par, while English amateur Lottie Woad carded a par 72, including three birdies and three bogeys.
