I am determined to get back into shape after three failures in a week, so I took special care of today’s match. And that was good, because it is another potentially difficult match.

I was at a disadvantage to some players early on, as the blue group, CAR RENTAL COMPANIES, contains companies that, to my knowledge, do not operate outside of the US, meaning those of us not from the US may well have had difficulty with this. I could have guessed this anyway, if one of them was another global company, but as it was, I left this group until last and solved the problem by default.

I was able to do it in large part because I solved the hardest purple group early on, which I was very pleased about; it was a clever connection that involved the end of the word being a chemical element—say, LEAD in PLEAD or TIN in LATIN—but I was on the lookout for this kind of sneaky NYT trick, and I spotted it right away. Phew!

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of the many increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.

The good thing is that you don’t need to solve the last problem, because you can answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some wiggle room.

It’s a bit more complex than Wordle, though, and the game can trick you a lot. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that might obscure the answers.

It is playable for free via the NYT Games website on computer or mobile.
