7 Cinematic References in Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” Music Video

1. “Death becomes him so well”

This is the most obvious reference and it’s echoed throughout the video, as “Taste” contains a few references to Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep’s 1992 dark comedy. The most obvious is the basic concept of two indestructible women fighting to the death over a man, as well as the iconic costumes.

There’s also the whole shotgun sequence, which nods to “Death Becomes You,” down to the hole left in Carpenter’s torso — a parallel to Goldie Hawn’s unforgettable “I’ve Got a Hole in My Stomach” scene — and the gunshot that goes through him.

As for that discussion in the middle of the clip that has everyone buzzing, “Death Become Her” also contains a rather pointed exchange:

“If she’s not dead… tell her to come here, walk over to me and kiss me on the–”

“Kiss you on what?”

Well, dear reader, now we know.

2. “Ginger biscuits”

One of the video’s most profound moments features Carpenter falling straight into a white picket fence and giving Ortega the finger, a pretty obvious reference to the delightful 2000 werewolf coming-of-age film “Ginger Snaps.”

3. “Kill Bill”

Ortega does her best Elle Driver in the middle of the video, sporting the red cross eyepatch. This look was first adopted by Daryl Hannah in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill Vol. 1.” The defibrillator murder could also be a reference to “Scream 4” — especially considering Ortega has become a mainstay of the “Scream” franchise — but the tone and aesthetic are quite different.

And that’s not all when it comes to Quentin Tarantino. The fonts used in “Taste” appear to be inspired by the opening credits of Tarantino’s 1994 crime classic “Pulp Fiction.”

4. “Addams Family Values”

There are plenty of iconic blondes mentioned here, and it would be a crime to leave out Debbie Jelinsky, Joan Cusack’s boa-wearing character on “The Addams Family.” Ortega, of course, has become an “Addams Family” queen in her own right with the Netflix hit “Wednesday.”

5. “Psycho”

One of cinema’s first horror films, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” — another iconic moment for blondes in cinema — gets an extended nod with the video’s reimagined shower scene.

6. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”

You can’t just include a gory chainsaw murder and call it a “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reference — it’s the lighting that really sells this movie. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic is known for its use of oppressive summer sun and some signature lens flare.

7. “Halloween is over”

If you’re wondering who plays the boyfriend in the “Taste” music video, there’s a fun answer to that question: In a cheeky bit of casting, it’s Rohan Campbell, the actor who played slasher neophyte and the world’s most toxic boyfriend, Corey Cunningham, in “Halloween Ends.”

Bonus: “Please, please, please”

It’s not a reference to the film, but “Taste” also includes a reference for fans of Carpenter’s music videos. At the very beginning, we see a teddy bear wearing the same kiss-stained duct tape that Barry Keoghan wears at the end of the “Please, Please, Please” music video.
