New on Netflix: 5 movies and series to watch this week (August 26 to September 1)

The best new TV shows and movies on Netflix this week are headlined by two Netflix originals.

First up is “Terminator Zero,” which is by far the Netflix series I’m most excited about this week. This animated series is set in the “Terminator” universe and stars Timothy Olyphant as the voice of a Terminator. Consider me officially a geek.

On the movie front, Deliverance is a supernatural thriller directed by Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels and starring eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close. There are also a couple of documentaries coming this week for those who prefer fact over fiction.

“Untold: Sign Thief”

“Untold” is a sports documentary series from Netflix. “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair” was released on the streaming service just last week.

This episode, “Untold: Sign Stealer,” focuses on Connor Stalions and his role in the Michigan sign-stealing scandal. In 2023, the NCAA launched an investigation into allegations that a member of the University of Michigan Wolverines football staff ran an elaborate sign-stealing operation that violated NCAA rules. If proven, the allegations could label the Michigan program as a cheater and lead to serious consequences.

Today, the investigation is still ongoing, and some players, including the Stalions, have already been disciplined or lost their jobs. In “Untold,” the Stalions will address these allegations for the first time, even though it could further harm the Michigan football program.

“The worst ex ever”

Many of us have had difficult relationships, but nothing as bad as the ones depicted in “The Worst Ex Ever.” A spin-off of “The Worst Roommate Ever,” this Netflix docuseries investigates four true stories of truly horrific relationships. The episodes cover stories of betrayal, violence, and deception, so consider this a warning if you (understandably) find this stuff too upsetting to watch.

Produced by famed horror studio Blumhouse, the series uses a combination of eyewitness accounts, bodycam footage, and reenactments. If you’re a fan of crime fiction or horror, “Worst Ex Ever” should definitely be on your must-watch list.

“Kaos”

“Kaos” is a British Netflix original series starring Jeff Goldblum as the Greek god Zeus. For most people, this would be enough to convince you of the series’ appeal, but in case you’re not convinced, I’ll give you a slightly more detailed synopsis.

The action takes place in modern times. Goldblum plays Zeus, an all-powerful but extremely insecure god. After noticing a wrinkle on his forehead, Zeus begins to wonder if his reign is coming to an end. If so, it could mean the end of the world. Paranoid, he begins to lash out at his fellow gods and three humans whose existence could lead to his downfall.

“Terminator Zero”

Set in the same universe and timeline as the original “Terminator” film, “Terminator Zero” takes place in a future where the AI Skynet has taken over the world. To maintain its power, Skynet sends out assassin robots called Terminators to eliminate potential threats, past or present.

“Terminator Zero” is not set in the United States. This anime series is set in 1997 Japan, before the events of Judgment Day, and stars Timothy Olyphant as the deadly cybernetic assassin tasked with eliminating scientist Malcolm Lee (Andre Holland) before Lee can harm Skynet. I am beyond excited to see this series, and will definitely watch it when it comes out on Netflix.

“The Deliverance”

“The Deliverance” is based on the true story of the Ammons haunting case, where the Ammons family of Gary, Indiana, alleged that paranormal activity — including demonic possession — occurred in their home.

In Lee Daniels’ film, the story is set in Pennsylvania and the Ammons family is replaced by Ebony (Andra Day), her mother Alberta (Glenn Close), and her three children Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins), Nate (Caleb McLaughlin), and Shante (Demi Singleton). Also starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo’Nique, and Omar Epps, this Netflix original is packed with acting talent, including several Oscar nominees.
