Restaurant charged me £50 to cut my own BIRTHDAY CAKE at party – owner said they ‘have to cover costs’

A WOMAN was shocked when she was charged a whopping £50 to cut her own birthday cake at her party.

She had just celebrated the occasion with friends before being hit with a huge bill and told it was to “cover costs”.

The woman, originally from Italy, was celebrating her birthday on Thursday and had invited her friends to a small restaurant on the outskirts of Arezzo, in Tuscany.

She paid a reasonable total of £557 for 13 people to dine there, but was surprised to see a £50 surcharge added just to cut the cake.

Before making her reservation, she had specifically asked if she could bring her own birthday cake and the restaurant staff assured her that this would not be a problem.

Although the woman expected a small supplement, she found the £3.80 charged per person by the restaurant to be excessive, Corriere Fiorentino reported.

She had only paid £38 for the cake she ordered from the baker, meaning the cost of cutting the cake ended up being more expensive than the cake itself.

The woman shared her experience on Facebook and the restaurant is now facing backlash for its handling of the situation.

The restaurant owner said: “We do not charge a service fee and serve mainly dishes of our own production.”

He added: “My restaurant has to cover the costs of the waiter who serves at the table, the dishwasher and other related services. We have to recover them somehow.”

Although he believes the extra charge for the birthday cake is justified, the owner admits that in this particular case his employees were a little “difficult.”

Had he been present on the night in question, he probably would have handled the matter differently, he said.

“I’d rather have 50 euros “It is better to do less and have people go home happy than this misunderstanding that will harm us all,” the restaurant owner explained.

He added that he wanted to introduce a “new rule” in the future.

It comes as a family were left horrified after a restaurant in a tourist hotspot charged them £17 extra just to cut their birthday cake.

The restaurant in Palermo, Sicily, sparked outrage after revealing its new cutting fees.

The family had bought their own cake at the Italian restaurant before being hit with a surprise exorbitant fine.

Attendees received their receipt after their celebrations were over to find they had been charged £17.26 to have their cake cut into pieces.

The cost was calculated as a charge of 86p per participant, despite the group spending £103.49 on pizza, wine, beer and water.

The restaurant listed the price as “20 X Servizio Torta,” which translates to “20 X Cake Service.”
