Could AI Help Select Pakistan Team? PCB Chairman’s Strange Statement Shocks Fans, Former Players

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the new buzzword and everyone wants to add those two letters to everything they do, just to make it sound cool. While Chat GPT and other similar large language models (LLMs) can do amazing things, they are far from reliable, at least in their current form.

But that hasn’t stopped people from testing AI, just to create a buzz around what they’re doing. But can AI help pick a cricket team? Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi certainly thinks so.

He suggested that the team for the next Champions Cup, a national tournament, would be selected using AI.

AI to select the team

“We had a lot of players for whom we didn’t have records. This Cup will strengthen domestic cricket, we will have a pool of 150 players,” he said.

“These 150 players who were selected, 80% were selected by AI and 20% by humans. No one can dispute that. We gave about 20% weightage to our selection committee,” Naqvi added.

Naqvi was reacting to Pakistan team’s surprise defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test.

Naqvi insisted that things will change in Pakistan cricket and will not remain the same.

“Remember my words that things will not remain the same and that many things are happening in the background,” he said without giving details.

However, Naqvi’s comments did not go down well with former players and fans, who questioned his cricketing knowledge.

“He has no idea about cricket”

Former Pakistani batter Ahmad Shahzad took to his social media platform, X, to express his disappointment.

He criticised Naqvi, saying the PCB chief lacked the insight needed to lead the revival of cricket in Pakistan.
