Nothing seems to work on a new pair of “Open Ear” headphones

Nothing makes some of the best earbuds on the market, and the company appears to be working on expanding its lineup with the “Ear Open” surfacing this week.

Nothing’s current lineup of earbuds consists of the Ear and Ear(a), two wonderful pairs of truly wireless earbuds that offer noise cancellation, Fast Pair, and solid sound quality at affordable prices. But it looks like the company has other plans in the works.

A regulatory list at IMDA spotted by 91Mobiles reveals the “Nothing Ear Open” in development. No images of the headphones are attached to the listing, but the brand’s logo alone has implications.

The name “Open” suggests that these earbuds can deliver a sort of ambient experience. Rather than blocking out the outside world, they can channel it alongside your audio. It’s a concept we’ve seen before, such as with Google’s first-generation Pixel Buds and Sony’s LinkBuds . Google took the approach of leaving a “tunnel” open for outside sounds to come in, while the LinkBuds were designed with a literal hole in the center with the speakers situated around it.

Many noise-canceling headphones, including those from Nothing, use a “Transparency” mode to transmit sounds from the outside world through microphones, but this never has the same effect as audio gear designed around the idea of ambient sounds.

There’s no word yet on when these headphones might arrive, but with IFA just around the corner, this seems like the perfect place.

Would you buy a pair of Nothing’s “Open” headphones?
