Meet UWM Police Department’s First-Ever K-9 Officer – Ezmae the Comfort Dog

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Police Department has a new member on the force, and he’s aiming to comfort anyone suffering from depression or stress.

Meet Ezmae, UWM’s first K-9 officer – a one-year-old female golden retriever.

According to UWM, K-9 Ezmae is a certified facility-trained dog, a type of service dog specialized in educational settings. Ezmae’s training allows her to assist students, staff and anyone suffering from depression, a victim of crime or any type of stressful event.

Ezmae was sworn in at a ceremony with her liaison, Officer Mindy Wucherer, earlier this month.

“Over the last few years, I have noticed that police departments have begun to specifically incorporate comfort dogs into their services,” Wucherer said. “I began researching the benefits of these types of K-9s and have found nothing but positive feedback from the departments that have implemented them. I am grateful to UWMPD and the university for agreeing that a comfort dog/facility would be a great addition to our campus.”

K-9 Ezmae was reportedly donated by Partners with Paws and also donated the training needed for her certification.

K-9 Ezmae will get to work participating in various events on campus, happily welcoming cuddles and belly rubs.

Welcome, Ezmae!
