Man charged in connection with February 2023 I-40 shooting

A 20-year-old man faces attempted homicide charges in connection with a February 2023 shooting in which police say he fired shots at another vehicle occupied by two people traveling west on Interstate 40.

Police say an accident led to the shooting.

Two vehicles drove into a convenience store on Donelson Pike after a crash, and a 31-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles got into a physical altercation with James E. Johnson, who was in the other vehicle, police said.

The 31-year-old man got back into a vehicle with a female passenger and left the parking lot.

Police say Johnson followed them in his SUV as they drove onto I-40 and fired shots at the other vehicle before hitting it and causing it to crash into the side of I-40.

The 31-year-old passenger suffered serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries in the incident.

In addition to the attempted homicide charges, Johnson is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.

Police said Johnson was arrested in July after shooting his sister during an argument. He remains in jail on $416,000 bail for the incident involving his sister.
