After successfully clearing concussion protocol, Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward spoke to the media. Ward said he never considered retiring after his fifth NFL concussion. The Cleveland native appeared grateful for the fan’s concerns, but reiterated his love and commitment to the sport. Telling reporters,

“I did a lot of research and met with concussion experts. They gave me the knowledge I needed, so I don’t worry too much. I know people worry about the numbers and all that, but I can’t let that affect me. I always look forward to getting back on the field. I’m happy to be playing again.”

The cornerback had a constructive meeting with the neurologist. Ward said he is wearing one of the new position-specific helmets to help reduce the risk of concussion this season. Ward will wear the new helmet for the first time in a game against CeeDee Lamb and the Dallas Cowboys. He warned top receivers when talking about leaving. Ward told reporters, “I can’t let receivers get away with it that easily in this league.” “I’m looking forward to giving them a hard time.”

It’s understandable that Ward doesn’t want to leave the game. Ward played his best season last year. The cornerback was a force in the running game and locked down top receivers. NFL executives took notice of his play last season, ranking him among the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

Ward’s talent continues to mature. His teammates have recognized it as well. They voted him a team captain this year for the first time in his career. If he can finish this season healthy, I think he’ll be a first-team All-Pro selection.

Ward was the local hero the city needed after being drafted with the fourth overall pick. He helped turn the Browns around from hopeless losers to perennial playoff contenders. He helps many people in the Cleveland area through his charity work. His love for the city is concerned about his long-term health. That’s what makes his concussions such a controversial topic. Fans want the best for him and his short- and long-term health. The talented cornerback will hopefully be a future success story for helmet safety technology.
