Tragic bus crash kills schoolchildren, parents in eastern China

A tragic accident occurred Tuesday morning in Tai’an, Shandong Province, when a specially equipped school bus crashed into a group of schoolchildren and their parents. The tragic accident claimed the lives of 11 people and injured 13 others, including one in serious condition, according to local police.

The group had gathered outside a middle school gate shortly before 7:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. The victims included six parents and five students. The driver responsible for operating the bus is currently in police custody and an investigation into the incident is underway, authorities said.

The devastating accident highlights persistent problems with school safety in China, where transportation hazards and attacks on schoolchildren have led to numerous tragedies over the years. Efforts to improve safety include increased training and vehicle inspections.
