Three missing in Connecticut town after boating accident

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (AP) — Three people are missing, without life jackets, after a boat they were on reportedly struck a pier Monday, Connecticut authorities said.

A major marine incident was underway in Old Saybrook, the North Madison Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook. They called the accident a “mass casualty incident,” meaning an incident in which emergency medical services resources, such as personnel and equipment, are overwhelmed by the number and severity of casualties.

There were eight to nine people on board the boat, local media reported.

The Guilford Dive Team was on scene, along with boats, personnel and ambulances from surrounding towns, fire officials said. The Coast Guard and LifeStar, an air ambulance, had helicopters on scene to assist with the search.

Old Saybrook is located approximately 30 miles east of New Haven.
