YouTube announces tools to protect creators from AI-generated copies

Google-owned YouTube has announced that it is developing new image management technology to help protect creators and artists from copying using generative artificial intelligence. In a post, the video streaming platform discussed the possibility of equipping creators and artists with tools that allow them to use artificial intelligence while maintaining control over the representation of their image, such as face and voice.

The first tool YouTube announced it is developing is a synthetic voice identification technology within Content ID that will allow partners to automatically identify and vet AI-generated content on YouTube that mimics their singing voice. YouTube said it is refining the technology and plans to launch the pilot program early next year.

The second tool will allow individuals from various fields to identify and control AI-generated content showing their faces on YouTube.

YouTube also said it is committed to cracking down on those who exploit the platform to create AI tools. The blog also said the video platform is working on developing tools to give creators more choices about how their content is used by third-party AI companies.

“When it comes to third parties, such as those who attempt to scrape content from YouTube, we’ve been clear that unauthorized access to creator content violates our Terms of Service and undermines the value we provide to creators in exchange for their work. We’ll continue to take steps to ensure that third parties comply with these Terms, including by continually investing in systems that detect and prevent unauthorized access, all the way to blocking access for those who scrape content,” YouTube said on its official blog.

To put this into context, YouTube pledged last November to offer music labels a way to combat AI clones of musicians.
