‘Jumping judge’ in viral video pleads guilty to attempted murder at trial

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Deobra Redden pleaded guilty to attempted murder at her trial.

Before he pleaded guilty, we heard from Judge Mary Kay Holthus and the court clerk who intervened to remove Redden from the judge.

Deobra Redden was originally charged with nine counts, but now only one remains: attempted murder. Redden pleaded guilty to six counts, while two others were dismissed.

The State called Judge Holthus to the stand as its first witness.

Holthus began explaining how she reviews cases and determines probation or sentencing conditions based on questions from John Giordani, chief assistant district attorney.

The State asks whether Holthus has since (before trial) realized that she had previously revoked her probation. “That is correct,” she responds. “You could say that Giordani is asking whether it is fair to say that hundreds, if not thousands, of criminal defendants have appeared before you over the years?” Giordani asked.

Deobra Redden pleaded guilty to attempted murder at her trial.

“I don’t know if I sent him to jail or if he was already in custody and he stipulated that he violated his probation. He may have agreed. I don’t know any of the facts about that, I just decided that your parole was revoked,” she said.

Deobra Redden appeared before Judge Mary Kay Holthus on Jan. 3 for a sentencing hearing on a charge of attempted battery. He was not in custody at the time of the trial.

A Clark County District Court judge and a marshal were both injured Wednesday afternoon when a defendant jumped over the bench and attacked the judge.

Holthus testified that during that hearing, Redden remained calm.

Giordani asked Holthus what happened when the Redden case was first heard. “I don’t want to say anything, it was just the usual situation,” the judge said from the witness stand.

Redden failed to appear at the previous sentencing date on which Holthus testified.

“He’s been convicted on average of one assault and domestic violence charge per year. He’s been convicted of three felony counts, attempted robbery, he pleaded to attempted robbery but it started out as an armed robbery. A classic violent crime. He’s been convicted of two felony counts of assault and domestic violence, one felony count of assault with aggravated battery. He’s been convicted of one felony count of malicious destruction of private property that started out as an attempted home invasion, again he pleaded less guilty.”

Holthus is seen becoming emotional as video of the attack is played in court.

“Obviously I hit my head, my family didn’t want me to drive and so my daughter wanted to get a scan… I had a headache for a couple of days and where he had pulled my hair out. I had pain where he had pulled it out. My back, my arm, everything was stiff like you know when you’re jostled,” Holthus testified.

Redden will be back in court on November 7.

This is a developing story.
