Jack Draper vs Jannik Sinner LIVE: US Open tennis result as Draper vomits during crazy semi-final

US Open ball boy catches virus that interrupted quarterfinal match

Jack Draper’s US Open run ended with a dramatic semi-final defeat to world number one Jannik Sinner, in a brutal match that saw both players require medical attention.

Sinner emerged victorious 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 in more than three hours, but the world number one was pushed all the way by a resilient Draper, who held firm despite the challenges of the heat and humidity in New York.

Draper, playing in his first Grand Slam semi-final at the age of 22, was ill on court during a turbulent second set in which, moments later, Sinner injured his wrist after falling behind the baseline.

Both players called for the coach but Sinner recovered and raised his game in the crucial second set tie-break. After a monumental effort, Draper collapsed in the third set.

Later, American duo Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz will battle for the other spot in the final. Follow all the score updates and reaction from the US Open men’s singles semi-finals below:

Poor Jack Draper. It reminds us that five-set tennis, with its combination of physical, mental, tactical and technical demands, can be the most brutal sporting competition.

Especially with this heat and humidity.

Here’s Jannik Sinner, on the second set that had it all:

“First of all, Jack and I are good friends. It was a very physical game, as we saw, I just tried to stay there mentally. It’s a special occasion. I’m happy to be in the final here.

“I’m just happy to be in the final here, whoever it is, it’s going to be a very tough challenge. I’m looking forward to it. Finals are special days.

Sinner didn’t answer a question about his wrist. I don’t know if that was intentional. There will be more at his press conference later.

US Open: Jannik Sinner 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 Jack Draper – Game, set and match!

It was a US Open semi-final we won’t soon forget. It had it all. But the result was that Jannik Sinner advanced to his second Grand Slam semi-final, and Jack Draper’s US Open run came to an end.

Draper and Sinner hug at the net. The 22-year-old Briton has given it his all and it shows. He looks completely exhausted. Sinner, on the other hand, has only just kept the game going when he needed to. Despite the heat and the wrist injury, Sinner looked very fresh in the second-set tie-break and in the third set.

Draper suffered on court and threw up three times behind the baseline. But he can take a lot of courage from his fortnight and head into his first Grand Slam semi-final. He lost to the better player today.

30-30 on Draper’s serve, but the Briton finds a good serve and a good forehand in the circumstances as Sinner scores.

Sinner sends a backhand winner down the line, then follows up with a drop shot from Draper to hit the forehand winner.

This brings a match point for Sinner.

A backhand winner on Draper’s serve – and the Italian did it! He comes out of a fierce battle against Draper to reach the US Open final!

Sinner remains at zero and moves one game away from his first US Open final.

Once there, the Italian will face an American – either Frances Tiafoe or Taylor Fritz, they will play later.

Draper will try to stay in the game, but it all seems to be over.

Jack Draper, sincerely, asked for a can of Coke.

Right now he is facing Sinner’s problems as he commits his 10th double fault of the semi-final at 15-30.

Draper then closes the net behind the second serve, but he can’t reach the net in time and Sinner easily finds the backhand pass.

Break point: Sinner, with a sublime move, closes down Draper’s volley and directs the winning backhand down the line.

Draper has little left to give.

A very nice service game from Draper, who returns to serve-and-volley and makes an excellent return.

Sinner, however, looks very solid on serve and holds at zero. Draper, again, does not move on a Sinner forehand sent inside the line.

Draper hits a superb backhand winner, but the game slips away from him from there. Sinner reels off four points in a row, including a backhand winner down the line that Draper fails to budge.

Draper looks tired during the points and sends a tired volley into the net. This gives Sinner a break point early on, but Sinner can’t adjust his hands as Draper breaks away.

Draper digs in on two points and holds with an ace in the middle. Well done.

Draper is back on the field with new equipment. Sinner is playing games and looks very comfortable.

It was the WILD point won by Sinner that led to the Italian injuring his wrist at the baseline. Somehow, he still won the rally. That forehand winner too. Wow.
