Sherrone Moore’s message to her team after the defeat

That postgame press conference certainly had an unusual effect on head coach Sherrone Moore. For the first time since the 2020 season, the Michigan Wolverines suffered their first loss at Michigan Stadium. The loss snapped a 23-game home winning streak while raising questions about how much progress can be made in this football program.

Here’s Moore’s answer to four key questions after Michigan’s 31-12 loss to Texas on Saturday.

His message to his team after the defeat

“My message to the team was that we’re going to have to be determined. We haven’t lost here in a while. We don’t like to lose. We didn’t lose at all last year. We lost once, twice the year before. So for us, it’s like we never want to lose, so we never think about losing. But for them and for us, I just think about them. I think about how they feel, and what we’re going to do to get better. That’s all we’re concerned about right now. We’re going to do everything we can in all three phases to get better at every stage.”

“And my message to them is we have to do it together. We can’t point fingers at each other, and it’s when adversity hits that you find out who we are as a team. And to see our guys, at the end, fight, the offense fight, come down and score. They could have easily scored, and our defense could have done the same thing. In the second half, they only gave up the touchdown, which we didn’t want. But at least they fought. It shows that there’s some determination. But now we have to put things in place so that the first half doesn’t go the way it did.”

On what needs to be improved

“For us, it’s a loss. We haven’t had one in a long time, so we really feel it. Our kids are feeling it now. They’re feeling it more than anybody. So I really feel bad for them and how they’re feeling. But we know on all sides of the ball, in all three phases, we have a lot of work to do. We just have to get better at the little things and not have penalties or turnovers. So that’s what we’re concerned about right now. We have to keep working.”

“I think we just have to look at the film and evaluate where we are. I think there were some positive sequences. And when you get behind, you start throwing the ball a little bit more. So we have to do a better job of executing the little fundamentals in all phases of the offense and we’ll get better.”

“We’re going to watch the movie and figure it out. I don’t want to be knee-jerk and say something when we haven’t seen the movie yet. So let’s watch it, let’s evaluate it. Let’s figure out what we need to do to put the right people in the right places to be successful, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Michigan’s Halftime Mindset

“I asked the team if they thought it was over, and everybody said ‘no’ flat out. So no, I never thought the game was going to get away from us. For us, we were going to fight until the end, no matter what the score was. And I felt like our guys fought at the end. And for us, we just had to get better at those little things.”

Has he ever considered using true freshman QB Jadyn Davis?

“No, I’m talking about the two interceptions, like I said, it’s a team effort. Interceptions aren’t always just the quarterback. It takes a team effort. So he did a good job of putting the ball where it needed to be. The one throw he had down the seam was probably his worst throw where the guy was open. But other than that, both interceptions happened because one of them went into the receiver’s hands and the other one, we didn’t run the right route. So in that case, he did a good job of handling it. So we’ve got to do a better job as pass catchers as well.”
