HYDE PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Anthony James worked for 43 years in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and had big plans for his retirement.

He hoped to visit Jamaica, where his father was from, and had already prepared his passport.

His last day of work was Friday, August 30.

The next day, James was dead, killed by a suspected drunk driver as he was backing out of a friend’s driveway on Crenshaw Boulevard in Hyde Park.

“We’re just devastated,” said his sister, Alicia James.

The LAPD said the driver – Viniesha Horsley, 23 – is under investigation for speeding and alcohol.

Alicia said her brother was a happy spirit, the life of the party and a dancer who looked forward to retirement.

“He was so excited to retire… he wanted to go to Jamaica. My father was from Jamaica and he had never been there, so it was a dream of his. He already had his passport ready.”

Sadly, the James family is no stranger to tragedy.

Tony’s son, Reggie James, 19, was shot and killed three years ago while standing next to a taco truck in downtown Los Angeles. Police still have no suspects.

Horsley was arrested for involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. But instead of being arraigned, she was released and the case was referred to law enforcement for further investigation.

It was a step backward from what the family had hoped for.

“My brother was killed by his actions,” Alicia James said. “I just want justice.”
