‘Why isn’t it happening…’: Derek O’Brien questions CBI’s delay in Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien on Friday demanded “speedy justice” in the rape and murder case of Kolkata doctor RG Kar and questioned the CBI’s delay in filing a chargesheet in the case.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Rajya Sabha MP asked, “How long will the family of RG Kar victim have to wait for justice?”

Speaking to the investigating agency, Derek O’Brien said, “The CBI has the accused and all the evidence. Why doesn’t it file a charge sheet and start the trial?”

His latest call for justice and demanding answers comes nearly a month after a medical student was found dead in the seminar room of the West Bengal government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A medical examination revealed that she had succumbed to external and internal injuries following a sexual assault.

The message added: “We all want speedy justice. Why is the CBI delaying the trial? We need answers,” O’Brien asked. The CBI has taken over the investigation into the sexual assault and murder of the trainee doctor of the Calcutta police, under the direction of the Calcutta High Court. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer, has been arrested.

Junior doctors on Friday continued their ‘stop work’ protest and sit-in outside the West Bengal health department headquarters for the third consecutive day in response to the failed standoff with the Bengal government.

The move comes a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to live-stream the meeting as the matter was pending in the Supreme Court. As many as 30 health professionals representing 26 medical colleges reached Nabanna for the meeting on September 12.

The protesting doctors demanded the suspension of the police commissioner, health secretary, director of health services and director of medical education. “We will continue our agitation despite our willingness to resume our work, but not until our demands are met,” he said. PTI said members of the protesting doctors’ forum.

The protesting doctors said their protest outside the state health department headquarters ‘Swasthya Bhavan’ will continue till their demands are met.
