Netizens Are Obsessed With Gen Z’s ‘Fairytale’ Home They Inherited From Their Grandfather

Images of a 24-year-old’s intriguing “movie-like” home he inherited from his grandfather have captivated users on Reddit.

The user, who posted under the name No_Chicken8848, uploaded a slideshow of images showing off the stunning home, located near Hamburg, Germany, on September 10. The post, which has garnered more than 23,000 upvotes, shows the transformation the home has undergone over the past year.

“I took these photos over a period of about a year, since I started taking care of the property in April 2023,” said the Redditor, who did not share his name. Newsweek“This building was originally built as a garage for my grandfather’s cars. The garage doors could be opened to let the cars in.”

The transformation from garage to stunning residence began in the late 1990s, when the structure was converted into a vacation home for grandparents. Today, the home has been updated with modern amenities.

“There is now modern gas heating, and the dining room even has underfloor heating,” the owner explained, adding that “most of the rooms have been tiled and they have installed a television, although there is no internet.”

The residence itself spans a spacious 200 square meters (approximately 2,153 square feet) and comprises seven rooms, including a dining room, living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, workshop and a secondary kitchen originally used for preparing game by the man’s grandfather, who was an avid hunter.

“The house has a total of seven rooms, three of which are shown in the photos: the dining room in the first two photos, the living room in photos three through five, and the kitchen in the last,” the Redditor added.

One of the most unique aspects of the home is its jukebox collection. “My grandfather loved collecting jukeboxes. There are four jukeboxes in the house — Wurlitzer, Seeburg, Rock-Ola and Ami — but the Rock-Ola is the only one that works perfectly right now,” the homeowner said.

The property isn’t just a home, it’s also a labor of love. Set on a sprawling 7,500 square meters (about 80,729 square feet) of land, the home is surrounded by a large garden that the Redditor and his girlfriend regularly work on.

“My girlfriend plants new flowers and greenery, while I mow the lawn, trim the trees and work on weeding,” the man said. His girlfriend, who is 25, also helps maintain the property, and the couple visits nearly every weekend to care for the grounds and enjoy the peaceful setting.

“The property is close to Hamburg, but it’s pretty isolated from what we consider ‘civilization,’” the Redditor said, noting that while the home serves as a quiet retreat, the couple has reflected on the challenges of living there full-time.

“Like in a movie”

The Reddit post drew admiration from other users. One commenter, GramzOnline, said: “This place looks like a fairy tale… what a special place to be able to continue to cherish the memory of your grandfather.”

Another user, faithhisuseless, echoed the sentiment: “Seriously, with a house like this, you know this grandpa had a big personality.”

Other commenters were quick to praise the home and its late owner’s taste. “So a man with taste and style,” user EmployUnable6697 remarked. Another commenter, kainers78, added, “This place is crazy, like something out of a movie. More pictures please.”

One user even suggested that the house should stay in the family forever. “You should live there until you die and pass it on to your grandchild. This place is awesome,” Vaguely_vacant said.

Despite the admiration of Reddit users, the new owner and his girlfriend want to enjoy the house as it was intended: a quiet retreat. “We thought about moving in,” the Reddit user said, “but it’s too far from work and usually pretty isolated.”

For now, the couple plans to use the house as their grandparents did: as a weekend getaway where they can relax, enjoy the outdoors and continue to restore the house and its garden to their former glory.
