Chicago crime: Construction workers attacked at gunpoint in North Lawndale, caught on video

CHICAGO (WLS) — A group of construction workers were attacked at gunpoint by a trio of thugs at a North Lawndale construction site. The incident was caught on camera.

The brazen crime occurred Wednesday morning as workers poured concrete for the basement of a building in the 1300 block of South Homan Avenue that is being rehabilitated.

“It took less than 90 seconds to come in, rob everybody and leave,” said the owner of the neighboring building, whose security cameras captured the incident. He asked not to be named.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Owner and contractor Martiez Greyer was on site inside the three apartments and said the concrete workers he hired were outside preparing to pour the basement floor when they were targeted.

“It was really scary. I had guys who were surprised and didn’t want to continue working, we understood that kind of thing,” he said.

The footage shows the cement workers setting up shop on a nearby vacant lot. That’s when the three robbers approach. One of them pulls out a gun and demands his belongings. A second gunman takes money and a mobile phone from the 38-year-old worker, while a third armed robber ransacks the cabin of the cement truck, looking for valuables. He finds none.

“Overall, no one was injured. We were able to keep our composure and are back on the ground trying to get the property back to normal,” Greyer said.

Greyer said his employees were shaken but not injured. Security camera footage captured the trio of criminals retreating to a silver SUV and fleeing the scene.

The contractor has increased security at the site. A Chicago police investigation is underway, but no one is in custody.
