No injuries in shooting at Arizona Mills mall in Tempe

TEMPE, AZ (AZ family) — A shooting at the Arizona Mills mall in Tempe on Friday sent shoppers into fear and some hid inside stores.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. at the shopping center near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road.

Police said it was not an active shooter and no one was injured. Officers initially called it a “shooting incident.”

Dozens of police officers and deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, blocking various exits from the mall.

Two teenagers said they had to hide out of fear.

“We saw people running down the hallway and we went into the back room and we heard there was a shooting in the dining room,” one said.

“I was really scared. I saw people running, so I was panicking. I didn’t know what was happening, so I hid there,” the other said.

It is unclear what led to the shooting or where in the mall it occurred.

An investigation is underway.
