US Senator Shifts MAGA Message From Dog Eaters To ‘Failed’ Secret Service Agent

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is campaigning in North Carolina on Friday where she continued to mock the former president. Donald Trump for comments he made during their debate Tuesday, from his “concepts of a plan” to eliminate the Affordable Care Act to his claim that Haitian immigrants eat dogs and cats in the city of Springfield, Ohio.

(Note: Springfield’s mayor, police chief, and Ohio’s Republican governor have all denied the dog-eating story, prompting bomb threats in Springfield.)

Left-wing pundits say Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance (who also spread the pet-eating story), continue to tell this story to stoke outrage against immigrants and to distract from Harris’ other central claim: that on many important issues, Trump is failing to offer details about his plans, with the vague admission of “concepts of a plan” being just one example.

Changing the narrative is a tried and true political maneuver, and Republicans cleaning up after the debate — after a widely viewed lackluster performance by Trump — are working to shift voters’ attention away from Ohio’s pets and toward more Trump-friendly topics.

Trump-friendly US senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) went on FOX News this week and told the host a new story Jesse Watters casting doubt on the qualifications of the Secret Service agent who was in charge of Trump’s team at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally in July, when there was an assassination attempt on the former president.

Hawley told Watters: “A whistleblower is now alleging that the lead agent in charge of advancing President Trump’s trip to Butler, Pennsylvania, failed training exams when she joined the Secret Service.”

Trump’s wife, Melania Trumpwho did not join her husband in the election campaign this year and is promoting her memoirs, Melaniealso stoked conspiracy theories in a video this week.

The former first lady said: “I can’t help but wonder why law enforcement didn’t arrest the shooter before the speech?” She added: “There is definitely more to this story and we need to get to the truth.”

Mrs. Trump’s suggestion that there is “more to the story” is a powerful argument for conspiracy theorists. It also marks a change in tone from her initial response to the assassination attempt, when she wrote on X: “I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect my husband.”
