CHICAGO (WLS) — Here’s a quick tip to avoid a heartbreaking scam targeting prospective dog owners.

According to technology security group Aura, scams involving puppies have seen an increase.

The company claims to have recently seen a 1,200% increase in puppy scam and spam messages designed to lure buyers.

Experts say never buy a pet without seeing it in person or on a video call.

Perform a reverse image search of the animal to see if the same image appears on multiple websites.

If the image is used everywhere, it could be a fraud.

Never transfer money or use a gift card to purchase a pet.

Always do your research before sending money and consider a local animal shelter where you won’t have to “purchase” a dog.
