Top Sonoma, Napa players shine at Vikings opener, Ed Sias cross country meets

The top locals posted impressive times at Saturday’s Viking Opener Invitational on the two-mile Spring Lake course.

Montgomery senior Amrie Lacefield won the junior/senior girls division with a time of 11 minutes, 38.7 seconds, the fastest time among the 197 girls who competed. St. Helena sophomore Corinna Schlatter had the second fastest time at 11 minutes, 43.2 seconds, finishing first in the Frosh/Soph division.

On the boys side, Santa Rosa sophomore Ome Zuniga won by 18 seconds out of nearly 350 runners with a time of 10:15.6, which also earned him first place in the senior division. Windsor’s Xavier Surgeon clocked 10:33.7, second best in the group, in a win in the junior division.

Ed Sias Invitational Tournament

Maria Carrillo put in a great performance at a massive meet hosted by Campolindo on Saturday.

The Pumas girls placed first overall out of 35 teams, led by the standout performances of senior Katherine Choe and junior Carlie Trenam, who finished 15th and 16th, respectively, out of a field of 450 runners. All five Pumas runners who earned points finished in the top 50. The others were junior Andi Fogg (24th, 13:36.2), senior Carley Schubert (44th, 13:58.9) and junior Isabelle Gross (45th, 13:59.2).

On the boys’ side, the Pumas had two players in the top 30 out of more than 1,000 finishers: junior Austin Petrik (11th, 10:34.8) and sophomore Cameron Jones (28th, 10:51.6).

The meeting took place over a two-mile course.

Volleyball

Rancho Cotate 3, Santa Rosa 0

The Cougars avoided a three-game losing streak with a three-set victory over the Panthers on Thursday, 25-13, 25-20, 25-14.

Josephina McKee had another double-double of 15 assists and 14 digs, Jasmine Lopez had nine kills with a .375 hitting percentage, Violet Hackamack added seven kills and Isadora McKee six kills, while Izabella Harumi totaled 14 digs and Roxana Corona 15 digs.

Rancho Cotate (6-7) will play at Las Lomas on Tuesday.

American Canyon 3, Sonoma Valley 0

The Wolves improved to 2-0 in VVAL with a three-set sweep of the Dragons on Thursday.

Ava Berry led the charge with 16 kills and two blocks, Emily Avila had 20 assists and two aces, Adrienne Nicolas and Vanessa Vidriales-Zarate each had five kills and Sophia Bernabe had six aces with 11 digs.

American Canyon (7-3, 2-0) plays at Vintage on Wednesday.

Golf for girls

Vintage 271, Sonoma Valley 347

Brooke Gongora once again led the way for the Crushers in a VVAL dual-match victory Thursday at Sonoma Country Club.

The freshman took home the medal honours with a score of 40, six over par. Teammate Sofia Richart was second with a score of 48. Addie Roole (59), Alyssa Malicki (61) and Max Wilson (63) rounded out the Crushers’ scoring.

Anabelle Shone shot 54 to set the tone for the Dragons.
