Gadkari declines PM offer, stresses ethics in politics, journalism

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed that an unnamed political leader had offered to support him for the post of Prime Minister. However, Gadkari declined, stressing that he was not aspiring for the post.

Speaking at a journalism award ceremony in Nagpur on Saturday, the senior BJP leader shared insights into his career. He recalled an incident where a person told him, “If you want to become the prime minister, we will support you.” Gadkari responded by wondering why he should seek or accept such support, noting that becoming the prime minister was not his life’s aim.

Gadkari highlighted the crucial role of ethics in journalism and politics. He also recounted a conversation with a communist leader, during which he stressed the importance of respecting honest opposition, highlighting the late AB Bardhan as an eminent politician who epitomised this principle. He lamented that politics and journalism today lack such ethical individuals. Gadkari concluded by emphasising that democracy thrives only when the judiciary, executive, legislature and the media adhere to ethical standards.
