Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Repeats at Weekend Box Office Against Speak No Evil

Tim Burton Beetlejuice Beetlejuice did big box office numbers last weekend, nearly breaking Andy Muschietti’s September debut record It: Chapter 1 in 2017, and there are signs that it will continue to be a significant presence in domestic charts for at least the rest of the month. The film saw a dip in its second Friday through Sunday run, but it continues to perform well.

Beetlejuice’s box office numbers drop, but film retains top spot

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The series’ second weekend wasn’t exactly memorable. Compared to the same period last week, the highly anticipated sequel saw its ticket sales drop 54%, which is higher than any studio wants to see, but also not atypical in the modern marketplace. What’s important to keep in mind, though, is that the horror-comedy is coming off the third-best debut of 2024 so far ($111 million), and 46% of that figure is still a nice chunk of cash.

Easily winning its second box office crown, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice added $51.6 million to its domestic grosses over the past three days, bringing that total to $188 million (according to The Numbers). After just over a week in theaters, that means it’s already the ninth-highest grossing film in the U.S. and Canada so far this year, having already grossed more than big titles like Wes Ball’s The Movie. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($171.1 million), by Justin Baldoni It ends with us ($144.9 million) and Michael Sarnoski A quiet place: first day ($138.9 million).

In a few days, the film should climb another three spots on this list, as it only needs $8 million more to surpass Adam Wingard’s. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($196.4 million), by Mike Mitchell Kung Fu Panda 4 ($193.6 million) and that of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($171.1 million)

Needless to say, it’s not really fair to compare the box office success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice compared to its predecessor, because there’s not only inflation to consider, but also years and years of hype and love for cult films that aren’t reflected in the big screen numbers.

The new version is clearly a big hit in the United States, but it’s not getting as much attention abroad. So far, the film has grossed $36 million outside the United States and Canada, which is only about 16% of the global box office. Still, the film’s success in North America has been significant enough to push Tim Burton’s film into the Top 20 worldwide charts for 2024. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice having now earned more money than Gil Kenan Ghostbusters: Empire of Ice ($200.8 million).

It remains to be seen whether or not the film will manage to hold its place at the box office next week, with three new titles slated for wide release.

Speak No Evil is already on track to become the first low-budget horror film of the spooky season to win the box office.

Given the nine-figure success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Last weekend there was virtually no chance that Don’t say anything bad was going to end up being the new number one domestic release… but let’s not forget that horror movie season has begun and the demand for new horror films is growing. The James Watkins-directed remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name helped further feed that appetite this weekend, and it will be considered a success despite only grossing eight figures.

Why? If I reminded you that this is a Blumhouse production, would that help clarify things a bit? The horror-centric studio, known for keeping costs low, has made Don’t say anything bad The film has already grossed $9.3 million overseas, bringing its ticket sales to $20.8 million worldwide, making it well on its way to becoming profitable after just three days in release.

Of course, Don’t say anything bad is a title that will have to make all its money right from the start of its release, because, as we have already said, we are now in horror movie season, which means that direct competition is coming in the coming weeks. The film has received positive reviews from critics thanks to James McAvoy’s performance, but Friday will see the arrival of Coralie Fargeat’s body horror extravaganza The substance with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, and the bizarre film by Alexandre Aja Never give up with Halle Berry.

Alien: Romulus surpasses $100 million in the US – the second film in the franchise to reach this milestone

Still on the subject of genre films currently showing in theaters, I will end this box office report by highlighting the latest box office achievement of Fede Álvarez’s film. Alien: RomulusThe film only ended up holding the top spot on the domestic charts for one weekend last month, successfully dethroning Shawn Levy’s. Deadpool and Wolverinebut it has performed well since its big-screen release in mid-August, and it has now reached a notable milestone.

Alien: Romulus became just the fifteenth domestic release of 2024 to gross over $100 million domestically — but what’s even more special is that it’s only the second title in the Stranger franchise grossed nine figures domestically. The only other title to achieve that was Ridley Scott Prometheus in 2012, and that blockbuster grossed $126.5 million before it was finished. Scott’s prequel ultimately grossed $402.4 million worldwide, while Álvarez’s latest has grossed $330.7 million to date.
