Listen: Jane’s Addiction Share New Single ‘True Love’ After Tour Cancellation and Onstage Brawl

Today, September 18, Jane’s Addiction capitalizes on their current media moment with the release of “True Love,” the second new single from the original quartet in 34 years. The latest effort from the iconic ’90s alt-rock pioneers follows “Imminent Redemption,” which filled a 12-year gap in July and a dramatic week for the band that ended with the cancellation of their reunion tour on Monday.

“True Love” shows a softer side of Jane’s Addiction, lending their talents to a haunting ballad that explores the drama and nuances of a whirlwind romance. Vocalist Perry Farrell leads a tense, brooding, and dark mix, accented by a slow guitar melody from Navarro that brings the song to a boil in the fiery final passage. Following a troubling dispute between the band members, the release gives fans some hope that this isn’t the end of the rock band that has been unrelentingly tumultuous for four decades.

On Monday, after a tumultuous week of their highly anticipated reunion tour that ended with an onstage brawl Friday night, Jane’s Addiction canceled the remaining 14 legs of their co-headlining tour with Love & Rockets. The quartet made their change of plans known by posting a message on their Instagram account, writing, “The band has made the difficult decision to take a step back as a group. As a result, they will be canceling the remainder of the tour.”

In a separate post on their personal accounts, Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins explained that the closed-door tension was caused by the actions of Farrell, who punched the guitarist during their Sept. 13 performance in Boston after experiencing vocal issues earlier in the week. “Due to a pattern of behavior and the ongoing mental health issues of our vocalist Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to terminate the current U.S. tour,” the musicians wrote. “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own leaves us with no alternative. We hope he gets the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are unable to assist all of our fans who have already purchased tickets. We see no solution that would ensure a safe on-stage environment or allow us to reliably deliver a great performance every night.”

Following the accusations, Farrell was forced to take stock and issued a statement of apology to his bandmates and fans. “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and having had the time and space to reflect, it is only fitting that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, my fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior and I take full responsibility for how I chose to handle the situation.”

“True Love” is now available on all streaming platforms. Watch the official lyric video below and stay tuned to janesaddiction.com for updates on the band.
