Trump assassination attempt: Here’s how the suspect acted – and how he didn’t act

The man accused of planning the assassination of former President Donald Trump drove about 41 miles before he was arrested Sunday, law enforcement said.

The suspect fled the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach until he was stopped on Interstate 95 at about Mile Marker 112 in Martin County. A witness had taken a photo of the suspect’s car and its license plate and reported it to authorities, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

This is how the suspect was arrested:

  • The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office issued a “be on the lookout” notice at 1:55 p.m. Sunday, which included a vehicle description and license plate.

  • A real-time crime detection center that monitors government cameras on Palm Beach County roads and hits from license plate readers helped identify the vehicle heading north on I-95.

  • All exits of I-95 from Palm Beach County to St. Lucie County were covered by law enforcement.

  • The Martin County Sheriff’s Office did not use a license plate reader to locate the car. A deputy located it by description and license plate at approximately Mile Marker 110, near the State Road 714/Martin Highway exit.

  • “We followed the vehicle until my big pickups got there, and with those big front bumpers, they maneuvered that vehicle to a stop, so there was no pursuit,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.

  • It happened at approximately Mile Marker 112, about two miles south of Becker Road in Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County, around 2:22 p.m., according to a time stamp on the body camera footage.

  • Deputies detained the suspect until the FBI and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrived to arrest him.

  • The Martin County Sheriff’s Office released a photo and body camera video showing them capturing the suspect.

What happened at Trump International Golf Club?

A Secret Service agent noticed the barrel of a rifle protruding from the bushes at Trump International Golf Club as Trump played a round.

At a news conference Sunday, Bradshaw said the Secret Service fired its weapons. The suspect did not fire his weapons, according to Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr.

A backpack, an SKS-type rifle and a GoPro camera were found in the bushes.

The incident is being investigated by the FBI.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state would also conduct its own investigation into the incident.
