Devin Strader, a participant from the last season of The Bachelorette and Jenn Tran’s ex-fiancé, was previously arrested for burglarizing his ex-girlfriend’s home in 2017.

In a protection from abuse petition dated March 22, 2017, and obtained by PEOPLE on Monday, September 16, The Bachelorette A former student was named as a defendant in the woman’s complaints. Days earlier, on March 19, 2017, the woman told police she returned home from an out-of-town trip “to find her room broken into” and an item missing.

She added that she and Strader, now 28, “recently broke up,” according to the affidavit. Although he lives a few doors down from her, she maintained that Strader never had a key or “unaccompanied access” to her apartment while they were together or afterward.

The officer who wrote the affidavit noted that the responding officer said the woman’s bedroom was the only area “that appeared to have been searched.” A jewelry box was reportedly ransacked, and there was “a broken perfume bottle, a makeup tray thrown out and a diamond necklace stolen during the burglary,” according to the affidavit.

The necklace, which Strader allegedly bought for the woman while they were dating, was the only thing reported missing from her home, according to the affidavit.

At that time, the woman filed a motion seeking to have Strader held in contempt of court for violating a restraining order she had put in place against him “on numerous occasions,” according to a rule of evidence obtained by PEOPLE.

An officer wrote in a police report that the woman claimed Devin started a fire on the street near her home and burned “what appeared to be the actual restraining order.”

Later, in a rule of cause, dated May 2, 2017, the woman alleged that after he was arrested for DUI — PEOPLE obtained Louisiana police records that show he was arrested at one point for DUI, though it’s unclear from the records whether the woman’s allegations relate to that exact arrest — he asked police to contact “his girlfriend” to see if she could “bail him out” despite her restraining order against him.

The woman claimed, and police records confirmed, that Strader sent her mail, called her multiple times a day and showed up at her door. “I can’t live my life with him continuing to contact me EVEN with a protective order,” she said in the show cause notice, signed by her domestic violence attorney.

Strader was later charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, ordered to pay $500, perform 30 hours of community service and attend the court’s “Effective Decision-Making School,” according to a proof of conditions document.

PEOPLE has reached out to Strader and ABC for comment.

A source close to The Bachelor The franchise told PEOPLE that the show takes the “safety” of contestants “very seriously” and “does everything possible to conduct a thorough investigation.” The source also noted that the protective order against Strader “was not mentioned” in background searches despite their “exhaustive vetting process.”

Reality Steve was the first to report the news.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE this month, she recalled that their relationship soured right after they left Hawaii, despite his previous “crazy proclamations of love.”

“Like I said, I can sit here and try to figure out why someone would change their mind after making all these crazy, crazy proclamations of love, but to sit here and disrespect the entire relationship by doing things that you know are going to hurt me, and doing things that are just disrespectful to me, that’s the next level of insanity,” she said, in part.
