JTRAN strike ends

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The JTRAN strike has ended.

Charles Tornes Jr., president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.

“We have held a ratification vote on this new contract. Everything has been signed and we are ready to return to work tomorrow morning,” he said.

JTRAN workers went on strike on September 4, citing unfair treatment by MV, employee safety issues and job security.

MV took over JTRAN operations for the city earlier this year.

Tornes says the strike ended after MV agreed to accept the contract ATU had concluded with the former transport operator.

“We are relieved because it has been a stressful situation and I know that people were lacking transportation… It has been hard work and it has paid off,” Tornes said. “We got what we asked for and that is what we were looking to do.”

Buses are expected to start running at 5am.
