AMG is building 200 examples of the coupe, each fitted with carbon trim and a livery borrowed from the firm’s Petronas F1 racing car.

  • Mercedes has unveiled a special F1-inspired version of its AMG GT coupe.
  • The “Motorsport Collectors” edition is limited to 200 pieces with hand-painted stars.
  • Each car is based on the 603bhp 63 Pro, the new driver-focused model in the GT range.

Mercedes-AMG is getting its butt kicked in this year’s F1 championship by McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari, and the German firm wants to celebrate that failure with a special ‘Motorsport Collectors Edition’ of the AMG GT coupe.

Based on the 63 Pro 4 Matic+, a track-ready but road-legal variant of the GT sports car, the new special edition is limited to 200 examples. Each car wears a livery inspired by that worn by AMG’s Petronas-sponsored F1 cars this season, and again in 2023, when the team fared slightly better, finishing second behind (but still outpaced by) Red Bull.

Opting for a GT in Obsidian Black metallic paint usually results in a very stealthy ride, especially when you add the usually optional AMG Nite package, which swaps chrome for gloss black trim. But this one sports hand-painted stars on its tail and light strips in Petronas’ corporate aquamarine colour.

The almost neon-like details highlight the side window graphics, door sills, 21-inch wheels and front bumper air intakes, and are also used on the brake system’s massive carbon calipers. The interior features further touches of turquoise, where the illuminated door sills, ambient lighting and sports seats finished in a mix of Nappa leather and microfibre fabric all feature Petronas’ signature hue.

F1 fans will understand the connection, but everyone else will be trying to figure out whether you’re obsessed with the 1980s sci-fi classic Tron or still can’t seem to move on from your Fast and Furious modding days.

The F1 makeover doesn’t extend to the powertrain, which is centred on the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 used in other GTs. But because it’s based on the GT Pro, the Collectors Edition produces 603bhp (612hp), rather than the regular GT 63 4Matic+’s 576bhp (585hp). AMG claims 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 197mph (317km/h) for the standard Pro, whose rear wing and front aerodynamics carry over to the special edition.

AMG hasn’t revealed prices for the 200 cars, or whether any have been pre-sold, but we’d expect them to cost at least £180,000/$200,000.
