Teen arrested with loaded handgun at Oakland County high school

SOUTHFIELD, Michigan – A 15-year-old boy faces multiple charges after allegedly bringing a handgun into a Southfield high school.

Police said they received a report of a student in possession of a handgun on Monday, Sept. 16, at Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology. The school was immediately placed on lockdown. According to authorities, school resource officers found the student in a bathroom and after a brief struggle, officers removed a .40-caliber S&W handgun from the student’s waistband.

Police said the gun was loaded and had one bullet in the chamber.

The 15-year-old was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing and possession of a weapon in a gun-free school zone.

He was denied bail and was remanded in custody at a juvenile facility.

Police said they did not believe the boy intended to harm others, but that he was carrying the gun for self-defense. They said the gun was found at a Detroit home where the teen had recently visited friends.
