  • Our spy photographers captured a Mazda EZ-6 prototype undergoing testing in Europe.
  • The electrified sedan, which debuted last April, is expected to launch in China and Europe this fall.
  • The vehicle’s components, sourced from Changan, support both EREV and BEV powertrains.

A camouflaged prototype of the Mazda EZ-6 has been spotted undergoing testing in Germany, just a month after the automaker confirmed plans to launch it in Europe. The Chinese-sourced electrified sedan will serve as a spiritual successor to the discontinued Mazda6 and a worthy rival to the VW ID.7 among other players in the segment.

Launched in April 2024, the Mazda EZ-6 is based on the same platform as Changan’s Deepal/Shenlan SL03 sedans. Initially intended only for the Chinese market, Mazda has now decided to offer it globally, although it will not be sold on North American shores.

Although it has already been revealed in China, the development prototype spotted in Europe remains camouflaged. It is unclear if there will be any aesthetic differences from the Chinese model, but for what it is worth, the prototype looks identical. We can also see the active rear spoiler in action and another set of black alloy wheels.

At 4,921 mm (193.7 in) long, the mid-size sedan is about an inch longer than the discontinued Mazda6 and 40 mm (1.6 in) shorter than the VW ID.7. It is built on a Changan-derived architecture that supports all-electric and range-extender powertrains.

Mazda hasn’t revealed full details of the EZ-6 yet, but they have shared that the EV variant will offer a maximum CLTC range of 600 km (373 miles), and the EREV version will exceed 1,000 km (621 miles). The closely related Deepal/Shenlan SL03 features rear-mounted electric motors that deliver 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) or 255 hp (190 kW / 258 PS). Its EREV variant features the less powerful engine paired with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that acts as a power generator.

The manufacturer has confirmed that the EZ-6 will be launched in Europe this fall, meaning we’re not far from its debut on the Old Continent. At this point, there’s been no word on a possible export to North America, which seems unlikely.
