Parly to hear DA motion rejecting Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff increase

JOHANNESBURG – Parliament is set to hear on Thursday the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) motion rejecting Eskom’s proposal for a further increase in electricity tariffs.

The electric utility company wants a 36% increase for its direct customers and 40% for its municipal consumers in the next financial year.

On Wednesday, the DA held picket lines to express its opposition to Eskom’s request.

“I think Eskom can do a lot more to reduce costs. It is mismanagement and corruption that has led to this proposed colossal price increase,” said the DA’s David Farquharson.

“If we got the money back from the people who stole the money, the poor taxpayers wouldn’t have to pay this exorbitant bill. It’s unfair and ridiculous.”
