Former GAA star warns others after ‘gum ulcer’ turns out to be cancer

Former Dublin GAA star David Hickey has opened up about his mouth cancer diagnosis on Mouth Cancer Awareness Day.

Speaking in a new episode of The Whole Tooth podcast in collaboration with the Irish Dental Association, David reflects on his sporting success, his pioneering medical career in transplantation and his current battle with mouth cancer.

After a successful Gaelic football career, which included three All-Ireland triumphs, David is now using his platform to highlight the importance of seeing a dentist immediately if you notice any defects inside your mouth that last for more than 3 weeks.

More than 700 cases of mouth, head and neck cancer will be diagnosed this year, including 250 cases of mouth cancer alone.

The Irish Dental Association today highlights the main risk factors for oral cancer including smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and overexposure to sun or radiation. However, oral cancer can affect anyone and at any stage of life.

David Hickey, who speaks on The Whole Tooth podcast, said: “I had a small ulcer on my gum and swelling on the floor of my mouth and I thought it might be serious. I immediately went to see my brother who is a dentist and after further tests at the hospital I was diagnosed with mouth cancer.

“Early diagnosis is essential. Dentists are well aware of the potential difficulties you may encounter if the problem is not treated promptly.

“In the case of oral cancer in particular, the window of opportunity is short and closes very quickly. I strongly recommend that you have regular check-ups and if you notice anything, such as bleeding when brushing your teeth, you should see your dentist immediately.”

Eamon Croke, Vice President of the Irish Dental Association, said: “Oral cancer can affect anyone at any stage of life. However, this episode of the podcast series is about more than just education, it’s about empowering people to take charge of their health and their future. We are honoured to have David Hickey on board for this vital conversation.”

“80% of the population are entitled to a free oral examination thanks to their PRSI or medical card.

“Signs of oral cancer include white or red spots in the mouth, a lump, persistent sore throat or hoarseness. If a person has not seen a dentist in a long time, we strongly recommend that they get checked out.”

“We also encourage all healthcare professionals to be alert to the signs and to consult a dentist if they have any concerns – it could save a life.”
