Fans have been stunned to discover that a 2025 blockbuster starring Cillian Murphy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson was filmed on an iPhone – the biggest film to ever do so.

The upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film 28 Years Later is the sequel to 28 Days Later, released in 2002, and 28 Weeks Later, released in 2007.

While most films use cameras from German manufacturer ARRI Group, director Danny Boyle decided the first “28” film in 18 years needed something different.

Filming for 28 Years Later wrapped this summer — and principal photography took place with a group of adapted iPhone 15s, WIRED reported.

With a budget of $75 million, 28 Years Later is the biggest film ever created with an iPhone and follows in the footsteps of a new Apple TV series.

Aaron’s fellow English actors Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell also appear in 28 Years Later.

A sequel has already been ordered – 28 Years Later Part II: Temple of Bones – and will be directed by The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta.

28 Days Later is a genre-defining film because it was the first to depict zombies as lightning fast rather than slow and sluggish.

The films take place 28 days, weeks and years after a deadly virus breaks out in London, infecting everyone and turning them into bloodthirsty killers.

Anthony Dod Mantle would serve as the cinematographer 28 years later – he and Danny won Oscars together in 2009 for their work on Slumdog Millionaire.

Anthony also served as director of photography on 28 Days Later, as well as Danny’s other films 127 Hours (2010), Trance (2013) and T2 Trainspotting (2017).

Principal photography on 28 Years Later wrapped in late August, and until now the production has kept the fact that the film was shot on smartphones a secret, with the film’s crew having been asked to sign confidentiality agreements preventing the detail from being disclosed.

But a clue has been circulating on the Internet for several months: a single paparazzi photo among a portfolio of 150, taken in July, shows Jodie standing next to a movie camera. is attached to a protective cage containing something that could be an iPhone, a professional camera operator not involved in the film told WIRED.

The use of Apple smartphones as the primary camera system for 28 Years Later was later confirmed to WIRED by multiple people connected to the film, specifying that the particular model used for filming was the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In August, Danny’s “strict security measures” to protect the 28 Days Later concert sent passers-by into a frenzy.

Residents were frightened after being “heckled” by a number of robots, which were used to monitor the site.

28 Years Later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
