Bryan PD Explains How Student Was Caught With Gun At School And Arrested

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A Bryan High School (BHS) student was arrested Thursday after authorities found a gun in the student’s backpack on campus. An unrelated incident in Hearne occurred less than 24 hours after that, but Bryan police are treating the case as a possession case, not a potential attack on the school.

The BHS student was taken into custody peacefully in his classroom. According to police, the firearm remained in their backpack until authorities intervened. The young suspect was charged with carrying a weapon in a prohibited place as well as making a terroristic threat with imminent fear for bringing the firearm onto school grounds.

In a meeting with KBTX, Bryan Police Department (BPD) spokesperson Officer Seth Waller stressed that responsible gun ownership and proactive reporting by parents can help prevent dangerous situations.

“If you see your child behaving suspiciously, report it,” Officer Waller urged. “If you find a firearm missing from your home or notice your child has acquired one without explanation, report it. It could prevent a serious situation.”

This investigation is still ongoing. The BPD said it is working closely with the school district to gather more details.

“The situation was immediately addressed and managed within a very short time after the incident was reported to school administration,” Officer Waller said.

KBTX legal analyst Shane Phelps explained that the decision to prosecute the student as a juvenile or an adult will be up to the district attorney.

“If they are under 17, the case will be handled in juvenile court unless the district attorney’s office decides to certify the minor as an adult,” Phelps added.

Thanks to the quick response from school administrators and law enforcement, Bryan Police emphasized and ensured that the situation was handled safely and without escalation.
