Turks and Caicos Islands, September 15, 2024 – Around 10 p.m. last night, residents of the Wheeland community reported to police, and some immediately informed Eagle Legal News, the sounds of gunshots in the bushes in the neighborhood.

Our news team set off in pursuit of the police and ambulance. We saw the police assist a man in one of their unmarked investigation vehicles and hand him over to the ambulance’s medical staff.

Videos of the shooting were released Sunday evening; police issued a statement confirming the double shooting.

The man transferred in the medical vehicle is in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds; this triggered the heightened security alert at Cheshire Hall Medical Center, which led to the suspension of visitation.

We visited the exact location of the shooting in the Wheeland area the night of the incident and the following morning and learned that the two men shot were brothers, attacked by two or three masked, armed men.

They lived together in a small apartment.

Residents of the area said they could not say why the couple were attacked, but the dead brother was said to have been working “with lottery numbers.”

Eagle Legal reported that the deceased was shot in the head “right outside his door” while he was allegedly holding money at the time he was shot.

The shooting does not appear to be a robbery.

The surviving brother managed to escape the suspected killers by hiding in the bushes until he saw the police and ran towards them.

The police report explains:

The Turks and Caicos Islands Serious Crime Unit has identified Barnabas Norbert as the victim of last night’s (Sunday, September 15) homicide.

Mr Norbert, 60, of Blue Hills, Providenciales, was killed shortly after 9 p.m.

Initial police reports indicated that the police control room received reports of gunshots being heard near Phase One in Blue Hills, Providenciales. Officers, accompanied by medical personnel, responded and upon arrival at the location, observed two men suffering what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Mr Norbert died, while another man, aged 29, was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

RTCIPF presents its condolences to Mr. Norbert’s relatives and friends.

At the scene of the homicide, police were informed shortly after 10 p.m. of an aggravated burglary in the area. A male victim had arrived home when he was stopped by two armed men who robbed him of valuables.

The armed suspects fled.

Shortly after 2am on 15 September, the police control room received a report of a robbery at a restaurant in Kew Town. According to reports, three men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, approached employees as they were closing the establishment and robbed them of a black Honda Fit car.

The vehicle was recovered from Dock Yard on Monday 16th September.
