Massapequa Park News: Police-Involved Shooting Leaves One Dead, Several Injured After Chase From Queens to Long Island

MASSAPEQUA PARK, Long Island (WABC) — A police chase that began in Queens ended in a fatal shootout on Long Island, leaving the suspect dead and several others injured.

“We saw lights going down Sunrise Highway, and before we knew it, the police officers who were taking our report jumped in the car,” said Sal Ienna, a Massapequa Park resident.

Ienna was outside her home Friday night speaking to police about a suspected drunk driver who had hit her car when the incident occurred.

“Five minutes later we heard about 10, 12 gunshots, rapid fire, one after the other,” he said.

What Ienna heard was the end of a police chase that left several officers and a civilian injured and the suspect being pursued dead.

Surveillance video shows the moment a car crashed near Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway as police followed behind. Authorities continued to comb the scene Saturday, later towing an SUV that had a passenger-side door riddled with bullet holes.

“It’s disgusting to see this. The first thing we need is security,” said Greg Lemay, who lives in the city.

Authorities say the incident began around 11:15 p.m. Friday in Jamaica when two NYPD officers attempted to stop a car.

The driver nearly hit the officers and fled toward Nassau County. That’s where other officers tried to block him with their patrol cars, but authorities say the driver nearly hit them again as he fled.

The pursuit eventually ended near Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway.

“Officers attempted to remove the individual from the car. A shootout ensued and the individual is deceased. He is at a local hospital,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a news conference Saturday morning.

Ryder said five Nassau County police officers, two NYPD officers and one civilian were injured in the incident and were later treated for their injuries.
