IIT Madras launches ‘IITM School Connect’ to train students in data science and AI, electronic systems | Education

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras launched IITM School Connect program aimed at helping students make informed choices about their higher education and careers.

Under this program, students are offered two certificate courses in “Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” and “Electronic Systems”.

Both the courses have been designed by IIT Madras faculty, with content tailored specifically to students of the schools, as per a press release. The certification programmes are open to all students of Classes XI and XII of the partner schools.

The highlights of the courses are as follows:

  • Recorded lesson videos
  • Practical training
  • Live Interactions
  • Missions
  • Computerized assessment for certification

Moreover, the online courses aim to provide practical work experience to students of Classes XI and XII, the statement added. The courses will be conducted for eight weeks.

Please note that registrations for the next promotion have already started on September 16, 2024 and will end on October 4, 2024. The course will start on October 21, 2024.

Additionally, schools interested in enrolling students for the next class must do so by September 30, 2024.

It is worth mentioning here that over 500 schools across India are partnering with IIT Madras, and as many as 11,000 students across the country have already been enrolled in the first batch.

Professor Andrew Thangaraj, Chairman, Centre for Digital Outreach and Education (CODE), IIT Madras, informed that currently, two key courses are being offered, namely Data Science and AI, and Electronic Systems, adding that plans are afoot to introduce more such hands-on programmes in the coming months, catering to a wider range of interests.

Speaking about the programme, Professor Prathap Haridoss, Dean of Academic Courses at IIT Madras, highlighted that students pursuing the data science course engaged in hands-on projects, using datasets to extract meaningful insights.

“Courses like these expose students to different disciplines and help children identify their interests and strengths,” he added.

Prof Vignesh Muthuvijayan, Faculty Coordinator of BS degree at IIT Madras, informed that the response from schools and students has been very positive so far.
