Red Sox reportedly considering trade for Mariners star, but at what cost?

The Boston Red Sox need to add elite pitching this offseason, but they’ll have to give up some valuable pieces to do so.

Suggestions have begun to surface that Boston could trade attractive assets like Triston Casas or Wilyer Abreu in return for a quality starting pitcher.

Losing either player would be painful, even potentially regrettable, but again, it’s impossible to gain value without putting productive players on the field.

As the Red Sox search for relievers and starters this offseason, they’ll do so knowing that Boston has a glut of infielders and outfielders, some of whom are expected to be included in trades to balance the organization, positionally.

Abreu is probably a more likely trade candidate than Casas for the Red Sox, simply because of the rise of Roman Anthony.

The other burning question for Boston is: What kind of pitcher do the Red Sox get in exchange for a player like Abreu or Casas?

Logan Gilbert, a 27-year-old All-Star pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, is a possibility.

Gilbert, drafted 14th overall by Seattle in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, becomes eligible for arbitration after the season.

Gilbert would be a perfect addition to bolster the Red Sox’s top line rotation, and his age means he could become a long-term part of Boston’s staff.

The Red Sox must understand that in order to acquire a player like Gilbert, they will have to part ways with an equally intriguing player from their own club.
