Apple TV Plus: science fiction series that will keep you on the edge of your seat

Apple TV Plus has been around for five years, and in that time the streaming service has built up a diverse library of programming. When it comes to standout streaming series, audiences tend to gravitate toward genre titles — whether it’s sci-fi, fantasy, or horror — and the platform is full of must-see content.

Apple TV’s streaming service may still be relatively unknown to the general public. But the Ted Lasso effect—and its record-breaking 72 Emmy nominations—has helped it gain ground against heavyweights like Netflix and Prime Video.

Highly conceptual and original in their storytelling, each genre show I highlight below stays true to Apple’s clean branding and thinks differently. In turn, sci-fi shows like Severance, Foundation, and Dark Matter stand out from the crowd.

Below is CNET’s guide to the best genre series to watch on Apple TV Plus right now. You might be in the mood for a neo-noir mystery, an epic monster battle, a real-life fairy tale, or something with a science twist. There are choices, choices, choices. So, sit back and hit play.

Rashida Jones stars as Suzie in Sunny, a series described by Apple TV Plus as a dark comedy. After her husband and child mysteriously disappear, Suzie is given a robot to help her grieve. As the series progresses, Suzie begins to uncover her husband’s secrets, leading the show to take a dark and dramatic turn. Presented in a sleek futuristic light, Sunny is very reminiscent of Black Mirror. And that’s a good thing.

If Ted Lasso paved the way for offbeat comedies on the platform, Severance is arguably the title that cemented Apple TV Plus as a streaming service dedicated to high-concept genre programming. The series follows Mark (Adam Scott), who works for Lumon Industries, a biotech company that has a unique (albeit terrifying) system for maintaining its employees’ work-life balance. Ben Stiller produces and directs most of the episodes in the first season, proving once again that he’s an exceptional talent behind the camera.

What would life be like if the space race never ended? That’s the big question For All Mankind answers. This prestigious sci-fi drama is set in an alternate reality where America and the Soviets are competing for dominance in space. Thanks to the ever-creative vision of series creator Ronald D. Moore and the committed performances of its epic cast, it’s probably the best sci-fi series you’re not watching.

Elisabeth Moss has a history of choosing complex characters to delve into, and that trend continues in The Shining Girls. The series, which is based on the book by Lauren Beukes, follows Kirby (Moss), a troubled woman who believes a recent murder is connected to a crime from her past. The mystery unfolds in a series of twists and turns as she teams up with a downtrodden investigative journalist (played by Wagner Moura) to find answers. This unpredictable thriller should have garnered more attention when it premiered in 2022.

What if we did things differently? We’ve all asked ourselves this question at least once in our lives. It’s a question that comes to life in Dark Matter, a high-concept and offbeat series based on the book by Blake Crouch. The series stars Joel Edgerton as Jason, a college professor who experiences a strange attack that alters his life and reality. Jennifer Connelly, Jimmi Simpson, and Alice Braga co-star in a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the season.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

The Godzilla universe has finally arrived on television in this Apple TV Plus series. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters seeks to reveal the organization’s secrets as it connects to the monsters that leveled San Francisco. Kurt Russell stars in his first role on a television series in nearly five decades. Here, he and his son Wyatt play Army officer Lee Shaw in the 1950s and present day. The monsters and Russell’s celebrity alone are reason enough to tune in.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey

Samuel L. Jackson moves away from the superhero genre to focus on themes of aging and dementia. He plays Ptolemy Grey, an aging man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. With the support of an orphaned teenager and the progressive research of an extraordinary doctor, Ptolemy is able to regain his senses and turn the page on his own life while searching for answers to the sudden death of his nephew.

Inspired by Hugh Howey’s literary trilogy, Silo explores a dystopian future world in which the survivors of humanity live in an underground structure. A varied class drama permeates the underground city. Population control, a murder mystery and the potentially deadly outside world keep the show boiling. Rebecca Ferguson, Common and Tim Robbins lead the cast.

Apple TV Plus pulled off the unthinkable by adapting Isaac Asimov’s epic sci-fi book series. But the streamer nailed it. Jared Harris plays Hari Seldon, a math professor who was exiled for predicting the fall of the Galactic Empire. Lee Pace delivers a terrific performance as Brother Day. The space drama follows Seldon and his followers as they fight to save humanity.

Jason Momoa proves himself in See. The show, created by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, explores a dystopian future where humanity has lost the ability to see. Losing sight doesn’t slow people’s ability to fight, though, and it’s certainly a spectacle to watch blind warriors wield weapons for war. Momoa’s charisma and passion shine through, making the show enjoyable, even if it’s a hard concept to believe.

Mark Protosevich, the writer behind films like Thor, I Am Legend, and The Cell, created Sugar, a series that proudly displays his love for the film noir genre. Visually, Sugar is a delight. Add in Colin Farrell’s soft-spoken, empathetic private eye, and you have a stylish murder mystery that’s full of patience and compassion. An unexpected twist shakes up the series later in the series, transforming the story into something entirely different.
