New exhibition and book “Silences on the Islands”

New exhibition and book “Silences on the Islands”

More than 250 silent films were shot in the Channel Islands between 1910 and 1930. Famous actors in these films included Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Buster Keaton, Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel.

The first films were only 5 or 10 minutes long and were shot on a beach. Island films later became successful feature films with thousands of casts.

On Saturday, October 5, a new exhibition – Silence on the Islands – will open at the Chrisman Channel Islands Center in Carpinteria.

The exhibit features photos of silent film scenes shot on Santa Catalina Island and Santa Cruz Island, as well as colorful movie posters.

The exhibition is curated by Betsy J. Green, author of the new book Silents on the Islands: silent films shot in the Channel Islands of California. She will be at the museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 5, answering questions and playing vintage film music. Her book ($25) is available at local bookstores and on amazon.com.

Green is happy to present talks/slideshows about her exhibit and book to local clubs and organizations. Contact her at betsyjgreen.com.

The Chrisman Channel Islands Center is located at 4994 Carpinteria Avenue in Carpinteria. Hours are 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Suggested donation: $10. Visit ccislandscenter.org.
