Visiting hours for Massachusetts State Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who was fatally injured during a training incident at the state police academy, will be held Friday in Worcester, with a funeral planned for Saturday.

Delgado-Garcia, 25, was pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a state trooper when he died Sept. 13 from multiple injuries sustained while boxing during training at the New Braintree academy.

“He always dreamed of becoming a state trooper and being someone important who would make a difference in the lives of people in his community,” according to his obituary posted online by Mercadante Funeral Home in Worcester.

“Known for his kind heart, generosity and dedication, Enrique had a strong desire to help anyone he could. He had the biggest heart and never gave up. Enrique was a devoted friend who was known as a champion and a winner, and that is how he will forever be remembered,” according to his obituary.

Originally from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Delgado-Garcia and his family moved to Worcester when he was a child. He graduated from the city’s North High School in 2017 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.

Delgado-Garcia worked for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. as a victim-witness advocate, a position he held for 18 months. He left that job to become a member of the 90th Recruit Training Troop in April and was scheduled to graduate Oct. 9.

On Sept. 12, while participating in a boxing drill, Delgado-Garcia lost consciousness. He died on Sept. 13, surrounded by family and friends, after being sworn into the state police and receiving his police badge, the Globe reported.

His family said he was missing teeth, suffered a broken neck and a brain injury, and his body was covered in bruises when he was taken to a Worcester hospital, where he was placed on life support, according to NBC Boston and Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra.

Attorney General Joy Campbell has appointed Boston attorney David E. Meier to investigate the circumstances surrounding Delgado-Garcia’s death. Meier is a former Suffolk County homicide prosecutor who currently practices criminal defense.

Delgado-Garcia is survived by his parents, Neftali Delgado and Sandra Garcia, his stepfather José Perez and his sisters, Cinthia Ramirez-Garcia, Glenda Delgado and Anel Delgado, according to the obituary. He also leaves behind several aunts, nephews and a large extended family.

A GoFundMe campaign organized for him raised $43,000 of a $60,000 goal.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at Plantation Street Funeral Home in Worcester. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Our Lady of Worcester Cemetery.
