Rockford man charged with murder after shooting near MaxMart

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A 51-year-old man is facing charges after a shooting on Kilburn Avenue left one man dead and another injured.

Murphy Doss, of Rockford, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Just after 10 p.m. on September 27, Rockford police rushed to MaxMart at 922 Kilburn Ave. for reports of two gunshot victims.

Officers found a 30-year-old man and a 34-year-old man with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were transported to local hospitals where the 30-year-old man died from his injuries.

Police said witnesses told them a verbal fight took place among a group of people and Doss fired shots in the direction of the victims and left.

Illinois State Police said they found the vehicle at Belvidere Oasis and found a handgun and ammunition inside the vehicle. They identified Doss as the sole driver. He was taken to the county jail.
